Great Falls Sunrise

Great Falls, Sunrise Lions Club meets every second and fourth Tuesday morning at 6:30 A.M in the meeting room on the lower level of Perkins Restaurant. Perkins is located at 526 2nd Ave. North.  We have community speakers at the first meeting of the month and hold most of the business session at the second meeting.

Currently we have just completed the spring PRCA Circuit Final Rodeo in Great Falls. Lions provide the usher and recycling for this event and have since its inception in 1980.

We have an ongoing “Sight for Students” program where we provide the screening for students in the low income areas of town and, if applicable, initiate an application for complementary eyewear. This is the second year for this project and we have several students who are now fitted with correct eyewear and are doing well in school. During our initial screening, a young man with a brain tumor was discovered and went to immediate treatment.

In April, we will again solicit application from Paris Gibson Alternative Learning Center for the Stanley Morse Memorial Scholarship. Paris Gibson is for the non-traditional high school studcnts who have trouble in the normal high school setting. Stan was a charter member of our club and passed away early in the decade from a rare blood disease. As a lifetime educator, Stan was instrumental in the drive to start a foundation to fund a scholarship for this group of students This is our 27th year for this $650.00 scholarship.

In the Spring we will again working on the roadside park at the base of Riceville on the road from Armington Junction to Monarch. This park was construction in the early 1970′s and was ravaged by the 1976 floods. We rebuilt the park and provide restrooms, picnic shelters and an off road place to park overnight. This park was dedicated in the memory of Mr. Al Buck a retired Montana highway patrolman whose vision and connection with the Montana Department of Transportation made the park possible.

The largest work event is the ushering for all of the seated events in the Four Seasons Arena at the Montana Expopark complex also known as the Montana State Fair. Sunrise Lions started this cooperative venture with the fair administration in 1973. During this period Lions work on a 50/50 basis with 1/2 of the service donated to the fair grounds and the other 1/2 billed as a fee for our funding of the many Lions programs.
